About Us
How We Got Started
In the 1980’s a small group of amateur astronomers in Washington NC began meeting at the Goose Creek State Park. One of the members secured a grant to provide two Celestron 8″ telescopes and several Astroscan telescopes for the park. Additional amateur astronomers from Greenville NC and the sourrounding area joined the group. They began monthly star parties for the public at Goose Creek State Park. In 1990 this group formally organized as the Carolina Skies Astronomy Club.
Our Mission
We are a small community of astronomy enthusiasts who love sharing the wonder of the night sky with others. Our club brings together people of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to longtime observers to learn, explore, and enjoy astronomy in a friendly and welcoming environment.
What We Do
Our club brings people together through monthly night sky observing sessions, community outreach events across Eastern North Carolina, and public stargazing programs in partnership with A Time for Science.
From telescope viewings and educational presentations to family-friendly astronomy events, we strive to make the wonders of the universe accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you are seeing Saturn’s rings for the first time or learning your way around the night sky, our events are designed to inspire curiosity, learning, and a shared appreciation for astronomy.
Meetings and Observing
Club observing nights are held monthly at the Contentnea Creek Nature Learning Center, where members and guests gather to observe the night sky. All experience levels are welcome.
Community
The club hosts public stargazing events throughout Eastern North Carolina. These events bring people together to explore the night sky with others who share a curiosity about the universe.
Star Parties
We partner with A Time for Science Nature Learning Center to host Starry Night, a monthly public stargazing event featuring planetarium shows, observatory viewing, and guided night sky tours.
